Although I love Spanish wines, I had never had a wine from Bierzo until recently when the wine steward at Harvest Ranch Market in Encinitas suggested I try one.  I bought this wine for $22.99.  All's I can say is that the wine smells and tastes like very nice Pinot Noir, in a sort of cross between traditional Burgundian Pinot and Santa Barbara Pinot.  For the price, you'd be hard pressed to find a nice wine from either of those regions!

For those who are unfamilar with Bierzo, it is a wine producing region in the "state of Castilla y Leon" in northern Spain, just west of Portugal.  The principal grape is called Mencia.  It imparts alot of floral scents to the wine, along with cherry and raspberry flavors, much like Pinot.  Serve this wine to guests without telling them what it is and I guarantee everyone will think it's Pinot.

4 stars.  Try it.
