Chateau Petrus Gaia (Bordeaux Superieur), 2002

When I saw this wine at the Ralph's supermarket in 4S Ranch a few months ago, I laughed at the silly name. It seemed like someone was trying to pull a fast one on those with limited wine knowledge, essentially taking advantage of those who "know just enough to be dangerous". Afterall, most wine fans who know about Bordeaux instantly recognize the name Chateau Petrus as the $1000 per bottle wine from Pomerol. Most fans of Italian wines recognize the Name Gaja as the produer of Barbarescos costing hundreds of dollars per bottle. But to put the two names together into a new brand "Petrus Gaia" seemed preposterous. So preposterous was the name of this wine that I plopped down my twenty bucks and bought a bottle just to see what it was.
The Petrus Gaia is a producer of Bordeaux. This is not a chateau classified under the 1855 classification scheme, and they sell wine under the relatively generic "Bordeaux Superieur" designation. The wine is a blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot. The last laugh seems to be on me. The wine was actually pretty darn good, and an excellent value as far as Bordeaux goes. The wine is drinkable right now and does not need decanting. It does not have the complexity of the finest Bordeaux's but has a little more earthy tones than a California meritage blend. For twenty bucks, you'll have a hard time finding anything from Bordeaux much better.
