Ahhh. Summer is upon us, and that means time for Prosecco. Too many people are unfamilar with Prosecco. Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine, but drinks much lighter than Champagne. It really is a great and refreshing summer sparkler. Prosecco comes in a "frizzante" version, which is lightly carbonated, and a fully carbonated version.
Proseccos by and large lack the complexity and bouquet of fine vintage Champage, but they also sell for a lot less. They are also less "rich" and less filling than Champagne. Prosecco is also a lot more afordable than Champagne. It is easy to get Prosecco for under 20 dollars. Most of the decent ones taste similar, so unless you are a hard core Prosecco fan, it may not make sense to waste too much brain power memorizing different producers.
Here is my suggestion for all those who enjoy a sparkling wine, but find that on many occassions Champage is just a little too rich (or too expensive). Go to a nice wine shop, and ask the merchant to point you to a nice prosecco. Stick it in the fridge, and drink it chilled on a picnic, at an outdoor luncheon, or as an appertif to an outdoor summer BBQ. It is light, and does not leave one felling "full".
At a recent wine tasting at my home on a Saturday afternoon, despite an impressive line-up of red wines from around the globe, the bottle of Prosecco in the ice bucket was the first bottle to go dry! Enjoy.
