Vieux Chateau Certan 1986 (Bordeaux, Pomerol)

Vieux Chatea Certan is, in my opinion, one of the best producers in Pomerol.  They blend a healthy portion of Cab Franc into their wines, whereas  many Pomerols are entirely (or almost entirely) merlot.  Other top Pomerol chateaus that use a good deal of Cab Franc include Lafleur, Nenin, Certan De May, and Clos L'Eglise.

I tasted the 1986 VCC about a year ago, and had the opportunity to taste it again in April 2007.  The wine continues to hold enough fruit to keep this wine fresh and inspiring.  The color is clearly starting to fade and the edges are turning to amber.  The primary aromas are exotic spice, cedar, leather, and cherry.  The tannins are almost undetectable, and the wine finishes long and smooth.  A truly elegant wine.
