The 2004 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon is an explosive "in your face" atomic bomb of a wine. It really is not quite ready to drink, and I would encourage a minimum of at least one, if not two to three years in the cellar before drinking this wine. For those intent on drinking it now, decanting for an hour is recommended.
The wine has opaque purple coloring, an earthy chocoalte laden nose with plenty of blackberry and some spice. The wine is full bodied, with plenty of fruit and tannin. Right now, the tannin is a little on the strong side, which is why I recommend some cellar time for this wine. Nevertheless, it has all the stuffing to mellow into a top notch cab in a few years.
The wine is currently drinking at the 3.75 star level, but I anticipate it will be in the 4.5 star range when revisited in a few years. The wine is difficult to come by, and the mailing list at the winery is "full". If you see this wine and your budget allows, buy it and cellar it. (retail about $70).
