Araujo Eisle Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1996

I tried the 2001 vintage of the Araujo cabernet a few months back, and was surprised how long it took to open up.  I recently tried the 1996 vintage.  The nose was muted for the first 20 minutes after the bottle was opened, and then the bouquet really opened up.  Crushed plums, blackberries, mint and smoke were all present in force, and the wine finished with fine, soft tannin.  A spectacular wine of power and grace.

4.75 stars.  The bad news is that this wine is mailing list only.  I have tried to get on the list several times in the last few years, and have never been given the priviledge.  Even the waiting list to get on the mailing list is full and closed, and they are not taking any more names.  If you want this wine, be prepared to pay dearly if you see it at retail, or on restaurant wine lists.
