I never thought I would see the day when nice French Burgundies would be selling for less than California Pinot.  But with the explosion of interest in California Pinot since the Sideways movie, coupled with American disinterest in all things French, the above is indeed happening.  Now don't count on getting any cheap bottles of DRC, Domaine Leroy and the like, but we are seeing an influx of Burgundy from some very good producers hitting the auction sites in the 25-40 dollar per bottle price range.  Domaine Bernard Morey usually produces good Burgundy at reasonable prices.

The 2004 Clos St. Jean 1er Cru Chassagne Montrachet from Morey was picked up for about 25 bucks on WineBid.  The wine boasts a medium garnet color, a smokey bouquet mixed with rose petal, and a cherry laden palate with a long finish marked by soft silky tannin.  The wine drinks nicely now, and there is probably not much to be gained from cellaring it, but I think it will hold up well for a number of years.

Hate to see the price of Californian pinots then...
If you're on a budget then the Domain Marc Morey Chassagne-Montrachet is not bad.
