Many of us think of Syrah (Shiraz) as being a warm weather grape.  It grows well in the arid Rhone River valley of France, near Provence.  It also develops beautifully in Australia's warm weather climates.  Some good Syrah's have been produced in Napa Valley for some time as well.  What is not well known to many wine enthusiasts is that Syrah can also be grown in cooler climates, such as Santa Barbara County.  The 2002 Taz Syrah is a Santa Barbara product.  It is a little less juicy, a little less peppery, and somewhat more smokey than many of the hotter climate Syrahs.  I had the wine about a year ago, and liked it.  I had it last month and loved it.  It looks like it now has hit it's peak.
