Chateau Cantemerle Grand Cru (Haut Medoc, Bordeaux); 1988

Chateau Cantemerle is a 5th Growth Grand Cru Bordeaux Estate.  They make one of the less expensive wines from the classified vineyards of Bordeaux.  The style is a lighter one, as the wine is typically a 50-50 cabernet/merlot blend (more or less).  I have had the 1988, 89, and 90 in recent months.  My preference was for the 1989, but the 1988 was quite good.  Unfortuntely, my particular bottle had a dried out cork, and the wine was a little oxidized, but it still posessed  a nice bouquet, albeit a little leathery.  The fruit was fading in my bottle, but two others who have tried it this month told me their bottles were holding up nicely and holding onto the fruit.  It would be unfair for me to assign a score since my wine had a failing cork, but I have one more bottle in the cellar to try, and can update the score at that time.

The wine sells for $39.99 at the Del Mar Wine Company on Del Mar Heights Road, just west of I-5.  This is a good value for 20 year old classified Bordeaux.
