Provenance Cabernet Sauvignon; Rutherford 2003 (Napa Valley)

The Cabernets from Provenance remain some of the best buys in their price category. The "Rutherford" designated cab is the one most frequently seen at the retail level, although an outstanding "Oakville" designated cab is seen from time to time from Provenance as well. Full retail for the Rutherford cab is $45, but it is easily found for under $25 if you shop at the discount wine outlets. It sells for $22 at Vintage Wines here in San Diego, and for about $25 at The Wine Club in Santa Ana, Hi Times Wines in Costa Mesa, and I think they also have it for under 30 bucks at K and L. The current release is the 2004, but 2003's are still lurking around at some retailers.
The 2003 Provenance Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is a fairly big, gutsy wine with a big mixed fruit bouquet, and an ultra-ripe presentation. Moderate tannin was present, but well integrated with the fruit. The wine continued to drink quite well 24 hours after opening. I think consumers will be hard pressed to find a better wine for under $25-30 dollars. The wine can easily handle 5 years of ageing for those who want to do so.
