Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon (Margaret River, Australia)

Moss Wood is a well respected producer of Cabernet from the Western Australian wine region of "Margaret River".  "Premium" Australian wines are just starting to gain respect in the USA, and the wines from Barossa Valley and other South Australian districts command all the attention.  Western Australia seems to be the forgotten child here.  Too bad, because some really good wines seem to come from here.

2000 was a good year for Western Australia.  This is not necessarily reflected in the vintage charts available in the various American publications which only report conditions in South Australia.  The 2000 Moss Wood Margaret River Cab is excellent.  Big an meaty with notes of smoked meat, black fruit, underbrush and spice precede a massive jammy fruit laden wine with tannins that are still strong but well masked.

An excellent effort.  4 stars if you can find it.
