Domaine Bernard Morey Puligny-Montrachet La Truffiere 1er Cru 2003 (Burgundy, White)

Readers of this web site recognize that I review about 100 noteworthy reds for every white that gets reviewed here. This is not because there are no good whites. It simply reflects my overwhelming bias towards reds. Notwithstanding the above provisio, the 2001 Morey Puligny-Montrachet La Trufiere was, in my opinion, an outstanding wine. Although I do not like the majority of California Chardonnays that come my way, I do enjoy many nice white Burgundies (chardonnays). The problem with white Burgundy (chardonnay), of course, is cost. I laught when my wine snob friends suggest that the only white Burg worth drinking is the Grand Cru stuff. I admit that much of the Grand Cru Burg is outstanding, but there is a boatload of great Premier (1er) Cru stuff that is equally as good, and some unclassified juice that is really good also. The key is simply learning who the good producers are, and trusting that whatever they make will deliver. Such is the case with Bernard Morey. Is Morey on par with DRC? Of course not. No one is. But they crank out great wines, at very very reasonable prices.
The 2003 Puligny-Montrachet La Truffiere 1er Cru is outstanding. This makes sense, since it is hard to goof up white Burgundy from a 1er cru vineyard in Puligny-Montachet. This wine delivers lemon, honeysuckle and toasty oak in a refined velvety wine. Drink now
