Turley Wine Cellars "Juvenile" Zinfandel, 2004

I admit that a lot of the popular Zins these days don't do much for me. But Turley Zins rarely disappoint. Turley makes a slew of differnet Zinfandel offerings from different vineyards. Some of their more famous vineyard selections sell for $50-75 dollars per bottle (retail). The Turley "Juvenile" Zin is a blend from several vineyards that have been partially replanted with new vines. They segregate the fruit from the new vines separately from the old vines. The old vine fruit makes its way into the single vineyard designated products, and the younger vine grapes are collated into the "Juvenile" label. Often times, younger vines produce poor quality fruit. Such is not the case with the vines used for the Turley Juvenile Zinfandel. I believe that the vines are from the Duarte, Hayne, and Moore vineyards, which are amongst the finest in the Turley camp. The best thing about the Juvenile Zin is the price. Retail about 20 bucks.
The wine drinks nicely young, with a peppery, spicey, blackberry laden fruit forward offering that pairs nicely with everything from pasta to cheeseburgers, to beef stew. If you see this wine, and you like Zin, buy it.
