Masi Amarone Costasera 2001

This entry was posted on 2/10/2007 3:50 PM and is filed under Italian wines, Amarone, Veneto, and miscellaneous.

I really really liked this wine, as did several of my dinner companions.  I usually try to hold off on Amarones until they reach 7 or 8 years after vintage, but the sommelier at Barcelona Restaurant in Scottsdale told me the wine was drinking well, and I took his word.  He was right on!

This wine boasts saturated purple coloring, and a big boquet of baked cherries, crushed plums, and smokey cedar.  One of my dinner companions, Dr. Michael Foreman detected some peppery Syrah like notes, although I did not detect them.  The wine was very full bodied, and is not for the faint of heart.  I do not know the alcohol content of the wine, but I suspect it was high, although the alcohol was certainly well concealed and not obtrusive.  The wine finished nicely, and paired very well with the red meat we were all eating that night.

I give the wine 4 stars, my friend Mickey gives it a whopping 4.5.  If you like Amarone, try this one out.  Wine Spectator significantly underscored it when they gave it 88 points back in 2005.

The wine can be found at the Wine Exchange in Orange County, Liquid Party Works in the San Fernando Valley, and Wallys Wine in Los Angeles.  All three are selling it for $45 to $50.
