Simi 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley (Sonoma County, California)

Simi makes outstanding Cabernets that frequently can be found on sale at supermarkets and discount wine shops for under 20 dollars. The Simi Reserve and Simi Landslide cabs are phenomenal, but it is the unassuming regular Simi cab that is the real sleeper. Overlooked by wine snobs everywhere, this wine can frequently blow the doors off of wines double the price in blind tastings. The most unfortunate aspect of Simi is that because it is relatively inexpensive, people drink it upon release, thinking it will not improve with age. This could not be further from the truth. It benefits from a good 5-7 years of ageing beyond it's vintage date.
The 2001 Simi Caberent Sauvignon was tasted during January 2007. It was drinking beautifully and has reached it's peak. It should stay on peak for at least another 2 years or better. Saturated purple color, plenty of fruit remaining, but softened tannin and a silky finish.
The wine is now knocking on a 4 star door, although not quite over the threshold.
If you can find the 2003, but it and stash it for a few years. You will be happy you did.
