Groth Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 1994

Groth has been around a long time.  They used to be one of the glamour wineries in Napa, but now the wine "paparazzi" have moved on to younger, sexier wineries.  That's too bad, because Groth makes good Cabernet.  In January, 2007, I had the pleasure of tasting the 1994 Groth Cabernet.  The wine was made from 100% estate grapes.  13% merlot was added to the mix.

Although the wine was 13 years old, it did not need decanting.  It opened up with a fresh bouquet of mixed black fruit, toasty oak, and a touch of cedar.  There is still abundant fruit on the palate.  Most consumers would guess this was a 7 year old cab, not a 13 year old.  It finishes off well, and I think the wine probably has another 5-10 years of life in it.  I do not think there is anything to be gained from holding it further.  Right now it is at the perfect juncture of youthful fruit and mature nuance.
