Another blockbuster Spanish wine with over a decade of age which is now hitting the on-line wine auction sites.  CVNE is an acronym for Compania Vinicola de Norte de Espana.  The company is one of the larger producers in Rioja, with a wide selection of Rioja wines at different price points.  The Real de Asua, along with the Impreial Gran Reserva (also reviewed on this site) sit at the top of CVNE's portfolio.

The 1995 Real de Asua was one of the best wines I have had in months.  The wine is made from grapes from one of CVNE's most prestigious vineyards, and the vines are all 45-70 years old.  The wine has a dark ruby color, and a complex bouquet of smoked meats, wild cherry, fresh herbs and leather.  Plenty of vibrant red fruit on the palate (think raspberry and pomegranite), with hints of plum and dark cherries.  This wine has so much fruit left after 12 years of age that one might think it was much younger than it is, were it not for the leather notes and scents of exotic Provencal herbs.

A truly wonderful example of Rioja Reseva at its best.  4.25 stars.  Purchased for $40 at an on-line auction.
