CUNE (CVNE) Rioja Imperial Reserva 1996

CVNE stands for Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana. It is easy to see why they now go by the acronym CVNE! To further make their moniker even easier to remember, they now also go by the name "Cune". By whatever name one chooses to use, this company makes very good wines from the Rioja region of Spain. The wines are primarily Tempranillo based, although small amounts of other Spanish varietals may make it into the mix. The company has been producing wine since 1879. Cune makes several different Rioja wines. The Imperial is one of their finest.
This wine is a medium garnet color and sports a strong and fresh bouquet of chocolate, black fruit, old leather, and sage. The wine is of medium body with little tannin remaining. The finish is smooth as silk. This wine will pair nicely with many cheeses, and virtually any preparation of lamb. It would also be a worthy accompaniment to grilled salmon for those who want a red wine with their meal.
3.75 stars. Purchased from WineBid for $20.00. They still had several bottles remaining last I checked!
