For all the wine snobs who think they need to spend $100 to get an ageworthy California Cabernet, I say you need to re-examine some of the older, established wine houses.  My father and I drank this 1992 Mondavi cab over the Christmas holiday in December 2006.  It still is drinking wonderfully, although it has reached the peak of maturity.  It was stored in a temperature controlled wine cabinet since release.  This wine is still boasting a wonderful and full bouquet of smoke, black currant, and earth, and still packing plenty of fruit on the palate.  All tannin is now melted away, and the wine finishes smoothly.

A very elegant wine by all considerations.  4 stars.

Are we talking about the $20 mondavi? Nice to hear a review of an aged wine that didn't cost a mountain of cash. It's just hard to hold on to something like that for fear that it could go bad. Some of the more expensive ones are more expensive because of the extensive aging they go through that will in-turn allow them to have sufficient backbone to last through years of aging. Nevertheless it's nice to here that modavi wines can hold up for a decade. I added a link to your blog on mine! Great wine Blog!

Yes, the wine was indeed the regular Robert Mondavi Napa Valley cabernet which sells at full retail for about 25-28 bucks, but is often found at discount for about $20.00.  This IS NOT the less expensive and less ageable "Mondavi Private Selection" or the bargain label "Mondavi Woodbridge".  It is amazing that the wine has held up so well.  I recently had a 1997 and a 1995, both of which also were quite good.  I had a 1994 which seemed to have lost all it's fruit.  I think the 2001, 2002, and 2003 Robert Mondavi Napa Cabs will all age well.  The 1998, 1999, and 2000 probably won't age too well, in my opinion.

On an unrelated note, the rather pricey Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernets can often age well for 15-20 years!
