Villa Antinori "Toscana" 2002

I have always liked the Antinori Chiantis.  I heard that starting in 2002, they dropped the Chianti tag from their standard bottling, and are now just calling it "Toscana".  By dropping the Chianti designation, it allows Antinori to experiment more with the blend.  In essence, he is leaving the Chianti arena and producing another "super-Tuscan", but keeping the price down to Chianti level.  Antinori no longer produces a standard Chianti.  They will continue to produce their single vineyard Chiantis.

I could not resist trying Antinori's new endeavor.  The blend is 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 5% Syrah.  Unfortunately, 2002 was a horrific year in Tuscany.  Way too much rain.  This wine was mediocre.  Nothing bad going on, but the nose was flat, and the wine was fairly soft and simple.  Decent, but forgettable.

I will not buy any more of the 2002, but If my gut feeling is correct, given the track record of Antinori, this wine could be good stuff in a better vintage.  The wine sells for $19 at the Wine Connection in Del Mar.

3 stars.
