Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage "La Chapelle" 1997 (Northern Rhone, Syrah)

This entry was posted on 12/3/2006 3:59 PM and is filed under French Rhone River Valley.

A recent tasting of several Hermitage and Cote Rotie wines from the mid-late 1990's featured the Jaboulet La Chapelle, amongst others.  The La Chapelle did not live up to it's storied reputation.  Still showing a lot of tannin and acidity, but the fruit was starting to fade.  The wine was purchased on the secondary market, so it may have not been cellared properly.  Overall a good wine, but a disappointment given it's pedigree.

3.5 stars

Readers should also read my review of this wine from a May 2006 posting.  At that time, the bottle presented to me was drinking wonderfully, and I scored the wine 4 stars.  I do not know if the variation between the two bottles is indicative of variability at the winery, or if it was due to improper storage of the wine over the last several years.
