The small region of Echezeaux in Burgundy is quite possibly my favorite wine region in the world.  Pinot Noir grapes in this vineyard region obtain a degree of sophistication and otherworldliness that is unmatched anywhere.  Unfortunately, most wines from Echezeaux from any of the well respected producers will cost well over 100 dollars.  They can easily reach triple that amount.  Laboure-Roi is an oftentimes overlooked producer who makes a fine Echezeaux.  It is not on par with the upper echelon from Echezeaux, but can be found for about one-half to one-third the price of many other Echezeauxs.  It makes a fine relative value, in my opinion, at least in better years.  The wine can serve as a good introduction to Echezeaux for those who do not drink on a king's ransom.

The 2003 Laboure-Roi Echezeaux has a dark ruby-garnet color, and a lovely bouquet with moderate smoky notes and a little licorice thrown over mixed berries.  There is ample fruit on the palate, albeit somewhat one-dimensional, and the finish is a little short.

If this was a California or Oregon Pinot Noir I would be going nuts for it.  Given it's pedigree from the esteemed village of Echezeaux, I would have to say that the wine is an underacheiver, but still an interesting buy at about 60 dollars.
