Tantara Pinot Noir "Gary's Vineyard" 2004

This entry was posted on 9/14/2006 10:29 PM and is filed under California and Oregon Pinot Noir.

A lot of winemakers are making Pinot Noir wine from grapes purchased from Gary's Vineyard in Santa Lucia Highlands, near Monterrey, California.  I have had Gary's Vineyard offerings from Loring Wine Co., A.P.Vin, Siduri, Roar, and now Tantara.  All of the wines have a tell-tale heavy earthiness that marks this vineyard.  Differences between wines are clearly present, but subtle, and rerepesent the effect of the individual winemaker.  The Tantara 2004 Gary's Vineyard Pinot has a little more red fruit and a little less earth on the nose than other wines I have had from this vineyard.  Lots of wild cherry on the palate, and a moderate amount of acidity give the wine a zesty tanginess on the finish.  I liked this wine a lot.

3.75 stars

This wine can be found at Wine Sellar and Braserrie for $48.99
