What's up with this wine.  Robert Parker gives it 95.  I give it about 85.  The alcohol content is too high.  I feel like I'm drinking brandy, not wine.  Full review of the wine is listed on our main web site under August wines of the month (click here).  What do you think?  Leave your review by clicking below.

      Kace,

First of all, I enjoy reading your website & blog. I also enjoy reading your threads and responses on the WS Forum. I would like to comment on “The Boxer”, one of Mollydooker’s new wines. Yesterday I had the opportunity to purchase some of this wine for a very good price and decided to pass. I have read too many personal reviews from people that just do not care for this wine. People seem to be saying, yourself included, that this wine is pretty one-dimensional and heavily extracted. Personally, I prefer a more balanced wine. I love Oz Shiraz and I am sure that I will get the opportunity to taste this wine in the future so I am not concerned about buying it now. I have a question about your review of this wine. The picture of the label that you feature on your website states that the wine has an alcohol level of 14.5%. I have noticed that in reality this writing is not present on the label. The back label states that the alcohol level is 16%. Your review even states “This wine has a stated alcohol content of 16%.” Did you add the 14.5% writing? Is this intended to reflect your opinion that this wine would be better with a lower alcohol level? Thanks and keep delivering the informative reviews.

        Ken,

Thanks for your insightful comments.  The label on the actual bottle of wine does indeed state 16% alcohol.  The image that I used on the website was a commercial image that I cut and pasted onto the website. I used that particular image because the quality of the picture was good.  I have no idea why it says 14.5% alcohol on the image.  I assume it was probably an old image or a prototype label that was designed before the final wine was finished and before the alcohol level was known.

I did not put it in there to reflect my bias that the wine is too high in alcohol, although you are absolutely correct when you assume that I would have probably enjoyed the wine more if it was lower in alcohol.  Your question did get me thinking about the issue, however.  If this image was some sort of prototype label designed while the wine was fermenting, perhaps the winemakers thought the finished wine would be in the 14.5% range.  Perhaps this was their goal.  If that is the case, then it means that the finished wine is much hotter than what they were planning on during fermentation.  How could their initial estimate be off by so much?  Who knows.  Why would they not try to correct it?  Who knows.  I'm sure they tried the wine and felt it was good so just let it go.  If they let Mr. Parker sample it early, I'm sure he told them it was perfect as is and not to try to change anything.

        Good question, though.
