I may sound like a broken record when it comes to Robert Mondavi winery, but I still contend that they are the most overlooked winery when wine snobs get together and talk about wines. Sure they make plenty of generic forgettable wines under the Private Selection and Woodbridge labes, but the cabernets sold under the Robert Mondavi Winery remain outstanding values, from the standard Napa offering up to the ultra-premium Reserve. Roughly half way between the standard and Reserve in terms of price comes the Mondavi "Oakville" and Mondavi "Stag's Leap" offerings. They retail for about 40 dollars, but are frequently seen at Costco and other discounters for 28-30 dollars.
The 2001 Mondavi Stag's Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful wine and is now reaching maturity. It has a rich bouquet of black fruit cedar and graphite, and layers of palate drenching multi-fruit flavors and a hint of peppery spice. The finish is smooth as can be. An absolutley lovely wine. If you stuck a trendy cult label on this wine you could find plenty of buyers willing to pay 80 dollars for this wine. At 30 dollars it is a bargain.
