Castello di Luzzano Oltrepo Pavese - Bonarda frizzante 2001

This Bonarda based Italian wine is a red "frizzante", meaning a slightly fizzy wine. It's not a full fledged sparkling wine. It fizzes for a few seconds when poured, sort of like a club soda, but quickly loses its "fizziness". I picked up this wine at an on-line auction for 3 dollars. Full retail is about 18 dollars. I imagine most discount wine shops would have it in the ten to twelve dollar range.
The wine itself is a light-medium ruby color. It has pleasant cherry and earthy notes, and finishes light. It is not a sweet wine. It's sort of like a beaujolais spritzer. This would be a great outdoor summer daytime wine, or a nice wine to serve with appetizers that are too delicate for a heavy red wine, but too meaty for a white wine. It might also pair well with "prosciutto y melon", Hawaiian poki, salmon or tuna carpaccio, or a seared ahi appetizer. You get the idea. I would not pair it with most meat entrees. It's not a real complex wine, but a nice change of pace.
