D'Arenberg the Lauging Magpie Shiraz/Viognier blend (McLaren Vale-Australia) 2003

Although this wine retails for 35 dollars, it can frequently be found at major supermarkets and beverage warehouse stores for under 20 dollars. If you can find it at this price, it is one of the better values out there if you like shiraz/syrah, and appreciate innovative blends. Viognier is a white grape, indeginous to the Rhone River Valley of France. Laughing Magpie is a blend of 94% Shiraz, and 6% Viognier. The wine has been getting a lot of good press the last few vintages.
The wine has a deep purple color, and one would not know that it had white grapes blended into it by appearance alone. The wine has the typical aromatic profile of Australian Shiraz/Syrah, with plum and blackberry notes alongside spice and leather. There is a hint of floral scent, which is a clue that Viognier has been blended in (Viognier is a very aromatic grape). On the palate, there is a fruit forward easy drinkability to this wine, but it also packs a moderate amount of peppery spice, provencal herbs, and anise. There is a slight citrus kick on the palate, another clue that some viognier is blended in.
All in all, this is a very enjoyable wine, and particularly suited for those who like to travel off the beaten path when it comes to their wine experiences. Australian Shiraz lovers should appreciate this wine the most. This would be a good one to bring to those "what am I drinking" events.
3.75 stars. Approximately 13 dollars on sale at Vons (or was it Albertsons?) with a club card not too long ago. I doubt the special price is still available. Expect to pay 15-20 dollars for the wine at a discount outlet, and over 20 dollars at standard retail establishments.
