Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alla Mura 1998

Banfi makes three Brunellos.  The regularly labeled Brunello is quite good, but the Poggio alla Mura and Poggio al Oro designates are usually outstanding.  Although 1998 was a good but not great vintage, this is truly a great wine, and is drinking well right now.  Because 1998 was sandwiched in between the more heralded 1997 and 1999 vintages, it usually sells for about 20% less than the 97's and 99's.

This full bodied Brunello has dark color for Brunello, and a large bouquet of black berry, currants, saddle leather, and tobacco leaf.  There is a lot of fruit on the palate, and plenty of soft tannin.  The wine finishes smoothly.  A truly beautiful wine.

I've got the possession of a Poggio Alla Mura 1977. I've got the idea, that it was well preserved. Anyone interested?
