One would think that Temecula should be capable of making some good wines.  The soil and climate are conducive to good grape growing, yet when it comes to Temecula, I have had more disappointments than pleasures.  However, I am happy to report that the Thornton Syrah Special Release is, indeed, a pleasure.  The wine has a medium ruby color, a soft but pleasing bouquet of blackberry and spice, and a a fairly fruit forward early maturing flavor profile.  The tannins are soft and easy on the palate.  The wine does not have the super intense extraction of the finest Australian versions, or French Hermitage or Cote Rotie, but this wine sells for less than a fifth of those others.  I paid about 15 bucks for the wine at Major Market in Escondido.
