Lovers of Amarone will like this wine, but it takes a lot of decanting.  Those who are undecided about Amarone probably won't like this one.  This is not a good intrduction to Amarone for those who have not yet had a good one.

The fellow who sold it to me said he thought it was ready to drink now.  Most Amarones need about a decade to mature, so I thought this seemed early.  I bought it and drank it.  It was way too young.  I had one glass and had to put it down.  I tried it again the next day, and it was better.  It is a deep purple, almost black color.  The bouquet is reminiscent of stewed plums and smoke.  Raisins dominate the palate.  Volatile acidity, which is almost unavoidable with Amarones was a little too prominent here.  The finish was nice by day two, but harsh on day one.

I paid 35 dollars for the wine at Bacchus Wine Market in downtown San Diego.

3 stars.
