Ordinarily, I am not a huge fan of California merlot, unless blended into a meritage.  However, a few California merlots can acheive the elegance of French St. Emilion style Bordeaux-merlots, which are outstanding.  In a good vintage, the Duckhorn Three Palms is such a wine.  The 1999 has an earthy, herb scented mineral-like nose, and a currant saturated palate coating attack.  The finish is sweet and long.  The wine from the 1999 vintage merits 4 stars.
