Chateau St. Jean Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 and 2002

The Chateau St. Jean Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is a serious contender for top wine in "super-market wine" category, and top contender in this price bracket. Much like the Franciscan Oakville Estate cabernet reviewed on this site, the Ch. St. Jean is available at virtually every supermarket in So. California (and elsewhere). Full retail price is in the mid 20 dollar range, but it can often times be found on sale for under 20 dollars. It is very important not to confuse this wine with the Chateau St. Jean California Cabernet Sauvignon. The "California" designated wine usually sells in the under 15 dollar range, but lacks a whole lot of character. The "Sonoma" designated wine is elegant and noteworthy. The "Sonoma" wine has a much more robust boquet than most cabs at this price point. The wine is lush and fruit driven. There is enough tannin to allow intermediate term cellaring if interested. The finish is smooth and lingering. There really is nothing to complain about with this wine. It has outperformed many wines selling for twice the price. I always have a few bottles of this in my home. I have had only limited experience with St. Jeans super-premium offerings such as the heralded Cinq Cepages or the Cabernet Reserve, although my limited exposure to these wines was quite positive. I think this is a good winery across all price points, and is reliable across most vintages.
For the 2001 and 2002 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, I give them 3.5 stars.
