Chateau Talbot 1996 (Bordeaux, St. Julien)

I have been very happy with most of the 1996 Bordeaux that I have had in the last year or so. Most of the wines (except the first growths and a few of the seconds) are starting to hit maturity, albeit on the early end of the maturity spectrum. The '96 Talbot is no exception. This wine would serve as a good introduction to aged Bordeaux for those who have not yet had the opportunity to experience these wines. The 96 Talbot has a nice aromatics and a strong nose of smoked meat, blackberries, and a little espresso. On the tongue there is saturated black fruit, and modest tannin, which is starting to fade. The wine will continue to improve over the next several years. I paid $50 for the wine a few weeks ago at the
Meritage Wine Market in Encinitas. You will have a hard time finding a nicely aged classified growth Bordeax from a good year with 10 years of maturity for a better price. 4 stars.
