Paloma Vineyards Merlot 1999

The 2001 vintage won wine of the year from Wine Spectator, and can not be found at a reasonable price anymore.  Fortunately, other vintages of this wine, which are every bit as good, in my opinion, can still be found at retailers and auctions, selling for regular retail prices.  I have had the 1997 and 1999.  Both were similar, but the 1999 was a tad better.  I gave it to a couple of my wine snob friends who refused to drink merlot, and all thought it was a first rate cabernet based meritage.  The wine has a lot more nose than most merlots.  You are greeted with blackberries, currants, and mixed berry aromas, followed by a fat, sweet, perfectly balanced mid-palate delight.  The finish is as smooth as Chinese silk, and the finish is a good 30 seconds.  I give this wine 4 stars.
