Michele Chiarlo Barbera d' Asti

This entry was posted on 2/12/2006 10:28 PM and is filed under Italian wines, Piedmont, Barolo and Barbaresco, good value wines.

This is a wine for immediate consumption, and is unlikely to benefit much from cellaring.  It can usually be found at Beverages and More, and often times at Vons.  It usually sells in the ten dollar range.  It is one of the best values around.  It tends to be a very fruit forward, precocious wine, with a lot of jammy fruit.  It pairs well with hearty foods and lighter fare as well.  You can almost treat it like a Burgundy when it comes to food pairings.  Go get a bottle.  It will be ten bucks well spent.

Hey VC. Good web site. Thanks for calling out Parker where he is over the top. Never had the Chiarlo Babera, but love his Barolo's and Barbarescos. However, I think he makes a couple different Barbera's. Which one are you touting?

        James,

For someone who has never had Chiarlo Barbera, you seem to know your stuff.  There are, in fact, three Barberas from Chiarlo.  I reviewed the "Le Orme Barbera Superiore".  This is widely available, and inexpensive.  The other 2 are the La Court Nizza, and  the Cipressi della Court.  I have not had the pleasure of trying either of the others.  My understanding is that they are higher quality (and higher price).  If anyone has tried them, I would love to hear some feedback.
